8 years old Jessica's view of the Tewkesbury Mustard Company
Robin with Adrian Edmonson who is holding the Gold Ball given to him to honour his elevation to grandfatherhood
Mustard Balls Used by a Cottager in the 20th Century
Robin met a lady from Tewkesbury and was told of her grandfather using mustard balls. He was a miner in the Forest of Dean, no more than 20 miles from Tewkesbury, and around the time of the 1st World War would take a mustard ball to work wrapped in a handkerchief. He used it by cutting shavings of the ball straight onto his food. This is interesting in bringing the cottagers craft into the 20th century although we are uncertain who made the ball.
We produce our mustard in Tewkesbury, the only mustard-maker in Tewkesbury. We are continuing a tradition that dates from before the 16th century, an artisan product that was famous throughout the land, mentioned in Shakespeare's Henry IV and recommended in many old recipe books and by commentators over the following hundreds of years, and has now featured on ITV with Adrian Edmonson in "Ade in Britain" on April 5th.
The Tewkesbury mustard was reputedly the finest in England, but was only ever sold in the form of mustard balls. We produce this very convenient form – convenient to transport, easy to mix and incredibly versatile. Tewkesbury mustard sold in jars is a 20th century development that in only a very few cases could lay claim to the qualities that made Tewkesbury mustard so famous. Our mustard in jars uses only ingredients available to medieval people, so this is a condiment fit for a king.
THE GOLD MUSTARD BALL
Robin has been persuaded to gild mustard balls for sale. This is a representation of a mustard ball that would have been on the table at the banquet offered to Henry VIII in 1535. Have a look in the Shop for more of the story.
The price may fluctuate according to the price of gold, gold being the most expensive element in the recipe.
